What is a pescatarian diet?

You might have heard the term “Pescatarian”, but what is it really?

This term was coined during the early 90’s as the result of two words “Pesce”, which means fish in Italian, and “Vegetarian”. As you might guess from the name, a Pescatarian diet is very similar to a Vegetarian diet but including seafood as a source of animal protein.

With the multitude of diet trends around today, it might get tricky to identify what exactly this diet consists of. Here is a basic guide:

What to eat:

  • Fish and other seafood
  • Grains and legumes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Dairy (if tolerant)
  • Fruits and veggies
  • Eggs

What not to eat:

  • Red meat
  • Poultry

There are some variations from this diet, for example excluding dairy or eggs, but it all really depends on what makes you feel good and works for you. You don’t have to stick to any “diet” and you should do what feels good for YOUR body and aligns with your values. We highly encourage you to give it a try! Not only will it promote a healthier you, eating responsibly sourced seafood is also better for the environment vs. other animal proteins.
