NETUNO Launches Indian Unicorn Filefish Fishery Improvement Project (FIP)

NETUNO’s ongoing commitment of sourcing from sustainable or FIP-certified sources, contributing to our position among the top five seafood companies supporting FIPs on FisheryProgress globally.

NETUNO USA, Inc., along with our local partners Neptune, Baraka and IndoFisheries, has launched a new Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) on the West Coast of India (Kerala and Karnataka) to focus on the Unicorn Leatherjacket caught by our trawl fleet.

This project efficiently leverages the same fleet and resources used for our existing India Squid and Grouper FIPs, with a primary goal of gathering vital data on the species’ stock and biology by December 2027 to transition the FIP to Comprehensive status by January 2028, ensuring a more sustainable and responsibly sourced supply for our customers.

Unicorn Filefish are harvested using specialized semi-pelagic otter trawl nets that are intentionally kept suspended above the seafloor. This method avoids contact with the bottom (which mostly composed of sand & mud), meaning no damage is done to sensitive benthic habitats, including corals, invertebrates, and biogenic structures. The nets are also carefully operated above submerged reefs, which protects both the reef and prevents gear damage.
