NETUNO Launches West Coast Indian Squid Fishery Improvement Project (FIP)
Launch supports NETUNO’s continual goal of sourcing sustainable or FIP-certified seafood
Ft. Lauderdale, FL (October 18, 2024) – NETUNO is thrilled to announce the launch of a new Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) supporting squid fisheries on the West Coast of India. In partnership with Neptune, IndoFisheries, and Winsor World, this initiative aims to improve the sustainability and long-term viability of these critical fisheries.
The FIP focuses on Indian Squid (Uroteuthis duvaucelii) trawl fisheries from Gujarat to Kerala, addressing significant stock variability and sustainability challenges. This project will not only evaluate biological sustainability but also emphasize the importance of social responsibility, particularly in mitigating labor abuses, which have plagued other squid supply chains globally.
“Our pre-assessment identified promising stock health data, with squid stocks off the Southwest coast deemed ‘sustainable’ and Northwest populations ‘rebuilding,’” says André Brugger, NETUNO’s Sustainability and Compliance Manager. “By refining data collection and implementing stock assessments, we aim to ensure responsible, long-term fishing practices in these fisheries.”
The initiative will run through 2027, aligning with NETUNO’s broader commitment to promoting sustainable seafood globally. To track the project’s progress, visit FisheryProgress.org.
